How to Install Realtek ALC655 AC'97 Audio Driver for Intel 82801GB ICH7 Controller

If you have a PC with an Intel 82801GB ICH7 chipset and you want to use the Realtek ALC655 AC'97 audio codec, you may need to install the driver manually. Here are the steps to do it:

Download the driver file from CNET or Realtek. The file name should be something like AUD_ALLOS_5.10.0.6020_PV_RealtekAC97.exe.

Run the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to extract the files to a folder on your hard drive.

Go to Device Manager and find the Intel 82801GB ICH7 controller under Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click on it and select Update driver.

Select Browse my computer for driver software and then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.

Click Have Disk and then Browse to locate the folder where you extracted the driver files. Select the file named Alcxwdm.inf and click Open.

Choose Realtek AC'97 Audio from the list of models and click Next.

Click Yes to confirm the installation and then Finish to complete it.

Restart your PC and enjoy the sound from your Realtek ALC655 AC'97 audio codec.

Note: This driver is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11. It may also work with other Intel chipsets that use the AC'97 audio interface. What is AC'97 Audio and Why You Need It

AC'97 stands for Audio Codec '97, a standard developed by Intel and various codec manufacturers in 1997. It defines a high-quality, 16- or 20-bit audio architecture with 5.1 surround sound support for the PC. AC'97 also covers the AC-Link digital interface between the audio codec and the motherboard or sound card.

AC'97 audio is widely used in many PC systems, especially those with older chipsets that do not support newer audio standards such as High Definition Audio (HDA). AC'97 audio provides decent sound quality and compatibility with various speakers and headphones. However, it also has some limitations, such as a maximum sampling rate of 96 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for multichannel audio, and a lack of support for digital audio output and input.

If you have a PC with an AC'97 audio codec, you need to install the appropriate driver to enable the sound functionality. The driver is usually provided by the codec manufacturer, such as Realtek, or by the motherboard or sound card vendor. The driver allows the operating system to communicate with the audio codec and configure its settings. Without the driver, you may not hear any sound or experience poor sound quality. What is High Definition Audio and How It Differs from AC'97 Audio

High Definition Audio (HDA) is a newer audio standard that was introduced by Intel in 2004. It is also known as HD Audio, Azalia or Intel High Definition Audio. It is designed to replace the older AC'97 audio standard and to provide better sound quality and features for PC systems.

HDA has several advantages over AC'97 audio, such as:

Higher sampling rates and bit depths: HDA supports up to 192 kHz sampling rate and 32-bit depth for both playback and recording, compared to 96 kHz and 20-bit for AC'97. This means higher fidelity and dynamic range for the audio signals.

More audio channels: HDA supports up to 15 output channels and 15 input channels, compared to six output channels and two input channels for AC'97. This allows for more surround sound configurations and microphone inputs.

Digital audio support: HDA supports digital audio output and input via S/PDIF or HDMI connectors, which can carry uncompressed PCM or compressed Dolby Digital or DTS signals. AC'97 does not support digital audio at all.

Plug-and-play functionality: HDA uses a Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) driver model that allows the operating system to automatically detect and configure the audio devices and codecs. AC'97 requires manual installation and configuration of the drivers.

Jack sensing and retasking: HDA can det
