Your Mossberg .410 bore will not have a serial number. Long guns were not required to have a serial numbers prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act, which went into effect January 1, 1969, and many manufacturers did not serialize their economy line of products.
Just for the record Mossberg made a number of bolt action shotgunsin .410 bore. To my knowledge the first was the Mossberg Model 70 .410 made 1933-34 and they have had at le4ast one such gun in their catalog since, However, these are entry level low cost firearms and one way the production cost was kept down was to not serialize each gun..that is..until the GCA of 1968 made in a matter of law. I would think that makes your gun post 1968 but since there is no MASTER list of serial numbers, one must depend on an expert to make the call..Such an expert. actually a pair of them are the authors of the definitive history of O.F. Mossberg...Vic and Cheryl Havlin who not only wrote the book but also run the Mossberg Collector's Assn. and buy and sell parts for the Mossbergs..You can ask them at www.havlinsales.com FWIW the odds on favorite would be the Model 183 series.......Hope this helps some...
