Since I can't find any more recent ATI driver (either for Windows 10 1909 or Windows 8.1), I just think I'm going to have to try and get Ubuntu installed again. Luckily for me the Latitude D531 has an extremely easy-to-use fingerprint scanner.

yeah... with OS X, you turn the computer on and it does start booting... with a computer starting a PC, you can always press a key to make it do something specific. Programmable many computers allow you to do the same with the BIOS -- you can control all aspects of your computer's boot process directly from the keyboard and that's a valuable skill to have.
Trying to get a computer to do something when it boots, however, is much harder to do without BIOS programming. Really, most modern computers don't have any type of bootable programming stored in them. The only computers that do (i.e. older BIOS before they started loading anything from a hard drive) boot up by programming a small amount of code into memory. But nowadays, the BIOS fetches that code from an IDE hard drive that's also a bootable area of the hard drive -- and this is why you need to start your computer from an actual bootable windows installation disc and not from a live CD. d2c66b5586
