The SF Giants have their own minor league system called the Sacramento/San Jose Giants. They are the youngest of the California League teams. The Giants spend the season generally in San Jose, with a few mini-seasonals and a few weeks of road games in Sacramento playing against AAA Fresno. They train at the bigger Spring Training facility in Arizona when possible.
Alvarez has been pitching out of the minors since 2005, but did have time in the majors as the solid seventh inning man for Tom Glavine in 2002 and R. A. Dickey in 2008-2010 (though he split time with the AAA FCBL GCL Mets). He was nastily effective for the statewide populous as a member of the Fresno Grizzlies in 2013 and 2014, striking out 8.32 batters per nine innings while walking 1.01.
Alvarez replaces Rob Norton the pitching coach for the Giants in the aftermath of San Francisco having a dreadful year for pitchers, which coaches are often the first to be let go. He replaces Ben Sheets, who was not retained by the team after they traded for Madison Bumgarner. Alvarez was with the Seattle Mariners from 1995 thru 1999. He was part of the pitching staff with Jack Hannahan and Randy Johnson in Portland (AL) in 1995 and didn't pitch or work the mound with the team in 1996. Alvarez was a replacement for Dan Coulters, who returned for two seasons to pitch for the Mariners. He was a AAA level pitching coach in St. Louis in 2000-2001 and had been the AAA pitching coach in Milwaukee in 2000. He was a roving pitching instructor in Milwaukee in 2002-2003.
