Advances in the study of Indian history through archaeological excavations conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India have provided valuable information on the Maratha empire. The empire was the synthesis of various invaders who began their rule in India after Alexander's invasion of India in the 4th century BC. The first of these were the Indo-Aryans who migrated from Central Asia and moved into the Ganga basin, the northern plain and the eastern coast of India sometime in the early 1st millennium BC. The Indo-Aryans were followed by various peoples such as the Scythians (200BC - ADc.c.200), the Sakas and the Kushanas (200BC-ADc.335). The Kushanas, a mixed population, were followed by the various Gupta dynasty rulers who moved into the Deccan region of the south in the 3rd century AD. The Gupta rulers established a large and powerful system of urban towns in the Varanasi, Palitana, and Rajgir districts in the Ganga basin. The rulers of these towns and region were successors to the Kushana rulers and served as the administrative centers for the Kushanas. At that time an institution called the Svetambara Samaveda (the White Samaveda)
also flourished in the south. At the same time the inclusion of new populations from Central Asia into these kingdoms led to the migration of greater numbers of people into the region. Among these people were the Southern Ganga basin (Vatsagar) populations such as the Santhals, Bhils, the Ahirs, and others. The Kamboja tribes of northern India are also known to have settled in parts of Western Maharashtra. They were people with a distinct regional culture and are believed to have descend from the Gangas, the postulated aboriginal inhabitants of the region. The 13th century historian Abu-l-Fazl is the first to mention this tribe. The Ongole inscription states that Tulja, the "great sage" was the prince who brought the invading Kambojas to this region. This inscription also references a king named Shahu, the son of Tulji, as the founder of the Shivaji state d2c66b5586
