In the vein of the movies Airplane and Beerfest, Harold & Kumar is a buddy comedy with a stoner mentality. I've been a fan of the series for years, and have watched the first three movies over and over again, so I had high hopes for this fourth installment. But I was not sure how they could take their concept in a new direction, and it took a little longer than I had hoped to really get into the film. I do like that they took time to really flesh out the characters, and not just offer up an inane plot to get the laughs, but also make their characters complex and relatable. That being said, the story was very predictable at times, and the humor was fairly stale and predictable. Also, a lot of the stereotypes that the characters were playing in the first three films were still there. For example, Harold is a nerd who does no sports and eats a lot of ramen. Kumar is a dumb slacker who never has to think for himself. I honestly think that the characters are a little more complex this time around, and I think that it was because of the fact that they had more time to develop them. This added dimension to the characters made them more engaging to watch. I was also surprised at how the characters did not really gel together as a team in a lot of scenes. They are always there to support one another, but the characters just seem like different people. I would have expected much more from them as a team by now. Also, this is the first movie that I thought was not worth the full price of the Blu-ray. I thought that $15 was ridiculous for a standard-def movie, and I would expect at least a DVD for less than $10 these days. I do think that the Blu-ray is the best quality you can get. I think that the special features were very entertaining, and I think that the movie looks good in the transfer.
