As part of Siemens' "Office of the Future," Peter Lscher discussed the future of energy, especially in the context of the power grid, published in the December 2008 issue of Industry Age "Building a 21st Century Grid." "I would love to be able to provide power either directly to a device, such as a traditional household refrigerator, or even more conceptually", he continued, "to provide power where you don’t need to build power lines and transformers."[v] He stressed that the battery-powered mobile phone had provided a prototype for such an arrangement, but few other fields are currently primed for such an expansion. Nevertheless, Mr Lscher emphasized that by 2050, the power grid should be "complementary to energy sources, not a substitute for it." And in other areas, such as solar energy, water, transportation, and healthcare, he pointed to the many other opportunities for moving away from fossil fuels and towards greener, sustainable alternatives. Siemens is heavily involved in the ongoing process of developing the smart grid, and the company is also involved in the integration of renewable energy sources into the fuel mix for the grid. Siemens is one of the corporate sponsors of the Race to Renew conference, a US. energy conference on the topic of powering the American economy with renewable energy. Mr. Lscher is also committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and Siemens and Deutsche Bank signed a contract to grant carbon trading credits to Siemens for its operations in Germany. Siemens is also working with Mitsubishi High Tech Materials on the development of an advanced fiber-reinforced polymer that could be used in power systems, saving weight and cost.[vi]
In 1993, Siemens opened its first sensor production facility in Cambridge, England, in conjunction with a research centre led by Cambridge University professor Mike Bernards. A few years later, in 1996, the company opened a microelectronics facility in the Netherlands, in cooperation with Philips. d2c66b5586
