Since 2003, Cole hosted her own hour-long syndicated radio show, Natalie Cole's With a Song in My Heart, which aired from 1 to 3 p.m. CT on KIIS-FM. The show was taped in Los Angeles, but it aired live on sister station, KIIS-TV. The show featured Cole singing selections from her extensive repertoire and chatting with her guests about their careers and personal lives. Cole also frequently performed live on the show.[24][25]
On January 2, 2016, Cole was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was the first person to be given the honor posthumously. Cole's star is at 1735 Vine Street in Hollywood.[30]
Cole's cause of death was certified as natural, which the family said in a statement. Her family confirmed she had no known history of heart disease.[24] Her death was the culmination of a long list of health problems. Cole had battled bipolar disorder and other mental health issues since she was a teenager. Her first marriage to actor Gary Trenton collapsed in 1985 after only 10 months, and she was divorced in 1987, just as she released her debut album, Love Songs.
Born in Northeast Philadelphia on August 24, 1958, Cole was a graduate of Temple University's Tyler School of Art. After dropping out of school to pursue a career in music, Cole signed a contract with Columbia Records in 1980. She was given a recording contract with Epic Records in 1983. She then went to work for Columbia, where she recorded her first album, the self-titled Natalie Cole, in 1985.
