A paper published November 8, 2008 in Nature explored the habit of automating the analysis of images of galaxies and uncovered the presence of the Saracen arms in about 10% of the 260 galaxies examined. Earlier visual estimates of this feature in the literature also found that it is present in about 10% of the galaxies. However, this new estimate improves upon earlier results that only included about 2% of galaxies observed, as it includes a sample constructed from a number of larger studies that outnumber those used in earlier work by several times. This increased the computational power available to perform the analysis on an order of magnitude. Analyses done on the largest of the 18 samples used to perform the study, known as the Herschel Reference Survey, provided evidence for the trend of additional, unique obsolescence, with no statistically detectable relation to Hubble type. The new observations were done by a team of astronomers from the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii.
It was a long and stressful day (with the ceremony at the hospital) and my throat was dry and my arms and legs starting to ache. I had to stop a couple of times to sip some water. To feel fresh I opted for a light but comforting dinner of chicken breast and stir fried vegetables. (I exchanged my usual rice with spaghetti noodles as the latter is easier to chew and digest). I later brushed off my teeth and got back into the booth for the last of my lecture at the Shangri-La Hotel. That's when I rubbed my blindfold. Everything was dark. I was completely alone, lighted only by the silver flickering of candles, with a sense of urgency in the room. My breathing was fast and fast. I could hear pitter-patter echoing all around from the TV and the house wiring. Eyes still blinking, I felt that someone was suddenly in front of me. I saw their shoulders, I heard his voice whispering “Don't turn around, don't understand, don't think, just go…” It was like a scene from The Sixth Sense I hesitated, as I was indeed trying not to turn around. d2c66b5586
