Omega A Journey Through Timel

The suspenseful and irreverent Wachowski brothers' science fiction saga The Matrix is one of the most inventive cinema experiences ever. The theories proposed by the turn-of-the-millennium movie are no different; the story is an allegory for the 1990s Super Bowl and the dueling technology platforms our reality is being shaped and formed by now. The trilogy (now completed) is a bravura showcase of digital technology and dazzling special effects.
The Wachowski brothers have made a trilogy out of the 1999 science-fiction superhero film The Matrix and the 1999 prequel The Matrix Reloaded. That 2005 prequel was itself rereleased in 2009 as The Matrix Revolutions. The first entry also spawned a 1997 animated companion piece called the animated The Animatrix, which was finished so long ago that it hasn't been released on any standard-def disc, but appears on an HD DVD exclusive box set. Collectively, the trilogy and Animatrix are known as The Matrix.
When the first two Matrix movies were released on DVD in 2004, they seemed like retreads. The Wachowskis, who wrote and directed those films, had burrowed into that world and returned with serious visual virtuosity and a refreshingly bold new vision. The only way to explain the third movie is to admit its blatant plagiarism -- more clever than the film itself -- from the first.
Beneath the flashy production and some clever riffs on the original, the third film, which is now available from High Def Disc in an unrated, remastered version, turns out to be the least interesting and artful of the three. After spending three movies in the Matrix world, the Wachowskis finally set the trilogy in a recognizable American setting. What could have been the bombshell revelation in the first Matrix film -- "you are living in a computer simulation" -- is dully spelled out in the third film. The revelation that Neo, the hero, is a computer -- and that he has been living in an "unwavering lattice environment" -- should have been provocative when it was first hinted at in 1999, but is just a stale old cliche by now. d2c66b5586
