On January 2, 2020, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York confirmed the it was hacked. In November 2019, hackers, reportedly an American-based group called the Shadow Brokers, had stolen a data dump of what it said were its handles, including credentials to its customers and pensioners. The leak included 12.5 million accounts belonging to customers of the central bank that were then taken on the black market. In response to the breach, the Federal Reserve, for the first time, revealed data stored by each of its customer-operated branches. Under the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, the Federal Reserve is a private, privately owned bank. However, it is charged with operating the country's monetary policy and is the administrative center for the nation’s banking system.

The Office of Personnel Management said it had suffered a data theft of about 21.5 million people, including 15.6 million adults and 5.9 million children, as well as Social Security numbers, financial, credit and medical information.
