Colin Westerbeck has written a number of books on photography, including Fotoflick: A Manual for the Advanced Amateur, The Minimalist Approach, and The Art of the Obvious. He is currently at work on a new book titled Dying for Colors: A Visual History of The Impressionists.
Street photography is like no other photographic genre. It is a highly personal form of camera work: it is about proximity, conversation, and the ability to make faces - to be there and to witness. But it is also a genre that is changing rapidly, with new forms and practices growing exponentially. Bystander offers a new and in-depth look at contemporary street photography and an exploration of this change within its historical context. It includes a new introduction from photographer Joel Meyerowitz and a wealth of new photographs by leading photographers (including Hiroshi Sugimoto, Garth Clark, Sven Larsson, Jannis Kounellis, and Joel Meyerowitz) alongside previously published material from across the ages.

Joel Meyerowitz was the founder and chief organizer of the seminal New York City street photography event St. Mark's PhotoFest and has been featured in American Photo, Fortune, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Wired, and was one of the first photographers to work for Vice magazine.
A new exhibition at Laurence King, The Montage: Street Photography in the 21st Century, brings together 100 images from established and emerging artists from around the world. The exhibition opens at Laurence King in March 2012.
The Montage is a unique forum in which photographers from the very different genres of photography can meet and have a conversation. This isn’t a show, it’s a platform for discovering and understanding the different genres of photography. The Montage is concerned with encouraging photographers to work within their areas of interest, to find out more about their subject, to understand more about the different techniques involved and to challenge and excite themselves about the genre and the particular photography.
In Bystander: A History of Street Photography , the photographer’s life, art and his major photographic explorations have been told for the first time. This new book from Laurence King connects street photography with the wider context of contemporary art, political protest, and the changing landscape of cities.
At the time of writing, this is the author’s first book and it’s a gorgeous and interesting read. Highly recommended for all fans of photography and for those who want to read a book about the practice of street photography.
