A RAR file contains one or more files that have been compressed into a smaller file using WinRAR software. The .rar file extension name stands for Roshal Archive, meaning a high quality compressed file (also known as an archive) that can be encrypted with a password.

Each volume is numbered in the file name (volname.part001.rar, volname.part002.rar). Then, when you uncompress your files, you need to have all volumes in the same location and extract them in chronological order.

WinRAR is an app for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 that you can download and use for free during the trial period to open RAR files. It was created by the same developers who came up with the .rar file format, and you can also use it to create RAR files.

WinRAR is a trialware file archiver utility for Windows. It is developed by Eugene Roshal of win.rar GmbH. WinRAR is not a free app, Windows users need to pay for $29 to buy the premium WinRAR. It can create and view RAR and Zip file formats, as well as unzip some other archive file formats.

A RAR, together with ZIP, is an archive file format compressed by a file compression program, or sometimes called file archiver. The most widely used file achivers for Windows are WinRAR and 7-ZIP. In short, you can use tools like WinRAR and 7-ZIP to make archive files of .rar and .zip extensions.

I installed winrar in D:\folderD, both at home, and at work. I have a .rar file in drive E:, E:\folderE\myfile.rar. So, at home I can successfully use the Windows Command Prompt in drive H: with the following command:

I did another test. Installed winrar in the root of folder c:\windows\system32. Apparently, when repeating the command H:>unrar x E:\folderE\myfile.rar C:\folderC the operation run normally. Yet, when I switched off the computer and came back hours latter, I repeated the latter command and again the error "Rar is not recognized as an internal or external command". If I go to c:\windows\system32 and use DOS prompt to search for rar*.exe or unrar*.exe, nothing is found, but those files are there. I can see them with windows explorer! They are not with the hidden attribute. The winrar I am using is for 64bit and the system is Windows 10, 64 bit.

RAR files use the extension .rar for data volume set and .rev for the recovery volume set. It is the native format for WinRAR archiver software. It is common to find many large downloads, such as files, containing software and their resources using the .rar extension.

I eventually found a post saying that 'unrar free' could be installed. I installed it, and ran unrar-free -x -p Filename.rar. It is currently going through each file in the archive and giving the following output:

If you have one or more RAR files to open, you can use WinRAR, which is free to use as a 40-day trial. A single-user license costs $29 should you need to use it beyond the trial period. If someone used WinRAR to cut a large file into smaller pieces, they will have similar names, such as sample0.rar, smaple1.rar, sample2.rar and so on. 041b061a72
